Mg Plus Overmolding Equals a Superior Housing

Leading OEM engineering publications have featured the breakthrough design marriage of a CWM mag die cast case with an over-molded polyurethane elastomer.

The new housing, for an advanced Tektronix fiber optic cable tester, offers greater strength and performance over plastic. According to Tektronix engineers, part consolidations of the hot-chamber Mg and elastomer unit result in a 20% saving compared to similar plastic cases. This combination of the two processes is believed to be the first example incorporating a complex, finely-featured magnesium die cast housing.

The application was featured on the cover of Design News magazine and in a two-page story in Advanced Materials and Processes magazine. The magnesium and elastomer application was also featured on the three-page cover of Modern Metals and in Product Design and Development.

For a detailed discussion of this “Overmolding” application, see “Case Studies” in the Die Cast Design Center Section.
